For this one Marky was enjoying a weekend away on his five-year wedding anniversary with Claire, long-time President of the GSNDS Ladies Auxiliary. Going into the game, the Gladstones were hypothetically in with a shake at scraping into the finals with wins by the top two teams in 5ths, a washout or an upset resulting in a very specfic percentage change in the other game, and a flogging of Cricketers Arms by the Gladdies.
Sadly we didn’t take care of the last and thus the rest is moo.
Losing the toss and fielding, the ten-man Gladdies were hit a little bit by some classy openers before Andre struck with three wickets in his first two overs, thanks to some pretty sound and pretty funny catching from Sulabh and Soloman respectively. 3/79 at drinks was 8/205 as Cricketers Arms put the foot down with some intelligent nurdling and hitting at the end. Andre’s 4/24 was excellent on the day and well done to Trav on his first Gladstones wicket (of many?).
The chase was defiant in the face of some disciplined and quality bowling. Unfortunately we just couldn’t get the motor really humming until some great hitting by Soloman (31) opened a 99-run door with 10 overs to go. 111 all out from there, with our nine wickets falling at half the value of Cricketers Arms’ eight. We were outclassed by some very good players in 5ths in 2016 and the silver lining is we might well have a path to finals cricket via better grading next winter.
